I believe that if organization were just about buying organizational products, there would be a lot more organized households! Organization is a journey. It’s a way of thinking, and it can be learned. Let me share with you a little of my journey….

Let’s start with the basics. I am a B.O. (born organized) person. When I was a child and was sent to my room for a punishment – I cleaned and reorganized it. For Fun! I am definitely in the minority when it comes to the American population. Or am I?…
However, as organized as I am, I was no match for working 40+ hours week from home with 2 babies and a child with special medical needs. It was during this time of chaos that many of the organizational systems I use today were born.
#1 Organization has nothing to do with cute containers.
After I got my organizational ducks back in a row, I started helping my friends organize their homes. I quickly discovered the #1 error in organizing. Open up any store advertisement this month and you will see gorgeous organizational bookshelves, baskets and boxes.
My friends would go buy these beautiful systems. They would then come home and “organize” their clutter into the new system. Soon they were missing papers. The new system wasn’t working and they were out $100.
I really started analyzing. What was I doing that they weren’t? In theory, organizational supplies should help you organize. Right?
#2 Organization is about creating systems that fit your life.
It isn’t as simple as it sounds. But it works. I have organized myself and many others using this system. Think about the areas of your life that are organized. Why do they work?
What about those areas that aren’t organized? Are you trying to make an organizational system work for you? As I de-clutter, straighten and reorganize my house, I have shared my organizational tips and tricks on my blog Organize 365.
#3 Pretty Baskets
One February, I was conducting an initial organization meeting with a client. As usually happens, we ended up going from one room to the next. We ended our meeting in her kitchen. Like most clients she was “embarrassed” by her lack of organization. I think she was afraid I was going to make her throw everything away. And she probably was afraid I would judge her.
I reassured her that she was no more unorganized than the next person. She just had filled her days to overflowing – and that was what we would find systems for. I have never “made” anyone throw anything away. And I am the last to judge anyone.
So there we sat with a large stack of newspapers by the wall and her kid’s jack-o-lanterns of candy on the counter. She immediately began making excuses for the candy and apologizing for the papers. I pressed forward,  ”Why do you still have the candy?”
“The kids love it,” she said. “I put it in their lunches.”
“And the newspapers?”
She hesitated, “I know I should just recycle them”.
“Do you read them?” I asked.
“Yes, but I only get to it every few weeks.”
“Do you read them all?”
“Then you need a decorative large basket.”
As with most clients, she couldn’t believe she was “allowed” to keep week’s worth of papers. Why not? She was going to get to them. Someday. If you really want to keep something – make the place you save it pretty.
And as for that Halloween candy – she got the kids bowls that matched the kitchen décor. Now her 2 biggest kitchen “problems” looked like the rest of the kitchen and the “organizational problem” was solved.
